This is probably John's best known photograph. It is a picture of his daughter, Karen, taken in 1965 when she was 4 years old. At first, John only printed it as a 5" x 7" enlargement.

Each year the Bay Area Photographerschose one subject for its show at the San Francisco Art Festival. In 1965 the subject was "children's alphabet" and they chose this picture as "J for Joy." Libra Artworks saw the enlargement at that show and made a poster of the piece.

One of the authors of a forthcoming book saw the picture and chose it for the cover so in 1966 it was published on the cover of Born to Win: Transactional Analysis With Gestalt Experiments by Muriel James and Dorothy Jongeward. That book has now sold 4 million copies.
